Bicycle bicycle bicycle
Bicycle Race – Queen
I want to ride my bicycle bicycle bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride my bike
I want to ride my bicycle
I want to ride it where I like
So..you may (but probably don’t) know that I’m a cyclist. That is, I ride bicycles…a lot. And like most things that I enjoy, I can become a bit obsessive about it. I love the physical exertion and challenge of riding hard and fast*. I love the gear. It doesn’t matter whether it’s mountain, road, or gravel; the equipment is pretty damned cool. And, most of all, I love cycling culture. There are so many different aspects to cycling culture that I couldn’t possibly do it justice. Let’s just say that revolving certain aspects of my life…exercise, transport, social interaction, etc. around bicycling is just normal for me. Yeah, I freely admit I’m a bike geek.

Of course, the photographer in me also enjoys capturing images of bikes, bicyclist and bike culture. So I’m sure you can appreciate how excited I was to visit a place where bicycling seems to be written into the culture’s DNA. That place would be the Netherlands, specifically, Amsterdam.
The thing about bikes in Amsterdam is that they are EVERYWHERE! They’re on the streets, against the walls, in hallways, on the trains, in the canals 😮 …you name it. I’m convinced there are more bikes there than ants. And since bicycling is a primary means of transportation, the Dutch ride EVERYWHERE! Amsterdam is the only place I’ve actually seen a traffic jam consisting solely of bicycles – no cars. Ya’ gotta love a city where bike lanes are the norm, not the exception.

It goes without saying – but I’ll say it anyway – I took a LOT of photos while in Amsterdam. The city is a stunningly beautiful subject. The activity, the architecture, the canals, & the people make it a particularly fun & gratifying place to grab a few images.

Upon arrival, I started roaming near the city center and, for the most part, wandered aimlessly, capturing images as I went along. As you can see, there are plenty of pics of bicycles, but I’ve also included the obligatory cityscape, tulip, and cat photo for your enjoyment. Yes, cat photo…you can thank the photography geek in me for that. 😀

So, check out the images and let me know what you think in the comments. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them.
