Oh, you think the darkness is your ally, you merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn’t see the light until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding…
Bane – The Dark Knight Rises

Much has been made about the similarities between DC Comics Gotham City and New York City. Of course, Gotham is probably an amalgam of several of the larger U.S. cities – NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, etc.. In any case, NYC has somehow become analogous with Gotham. It’s reputation for cold, aloof inhabitants, high crime rates, and grand, imposing architecture all conspire to create the feeling of DC’s Gotham City.

The thought really soaked in on a recent trip to the Big Apple. Of course, I didn’t see the Caped Crusader take out any bad guys, but I did experience all the elements that would lead you to believe that a dark, brooding super hero, i.e. Batman, could be lurking around the city. (And yeah…I did run into the Batman wannabe that inhabits Times Square. Enough said)

Now, I don’t disparage any of those true believers who are adamant that the Batman does exist. But if you are someone who does know him, do me a favor. Please, please, PLEASE ask Batman to drop me a line, because I’d love to do a series of street portraits of him. 🙂

In all seriousness, NYC is a fantastic place for street photography. There seemed to be something happening around every corner. And even with a bit of rain, the winter light was still fantastic. I’m definitely looking forward to going back & spending more time roaming the streets of Gotham. Who knows? Maybe I’ll see Batman stalking some place other than Times Square.

Hope ya’ enjoyed the pics & thanks for visiting my site.
