“When you come to the edge of all the light you have, and must take a step into the darkness of the unknown, believe that one of two things will happen. Either there will be something solid for you to stand on – or you will be taught how to fly.”
Patrick Overton

There are days when the location, time, & light combine to create an atmosphere of photographic wonderfulness. Days when the lucky photographer (Me!) simply needs to recognize the moment, raise camera to eye, and take the picture. Fortunately, this was one of those days!

Early morning winter’s light in downtown LA is either overcast & grey or bright & contrasty – not sure there’s an in-between. Anyway, I consider the latter an essential ingredient for beautifully lit street photography. So on this particular morning, I was really excited driving downtown to capture what I hoped would be a cool series of images.

As I roamed through the streets, I really appreciated the massive, dark shadows mixed with the stark, white light. One of the reasons I really love black and white photography is its ability to create mood and atmosphere. When the light is like this, DTLA really has this wonderful film noir/graphic novel-ish look. If you squint hard enough, it’s kinda’ like walking through a black and white dream. Yeah…It’s just like that.

So, hopefully, the light, the shadow, and the look have allowed you to briefly view the streets as I do (that is with dramatic contrast). Ya’ gotta love the LA winter’s morning light!

Now, in response to Overton’s quote – at the end of the day, I think I found something solid to stand on in the darkness…or maybe I just learned to fly. You can be the judge. Let me know what you think in the comments.
Thanks.
